Research

The DSIC's aim is to assist the Defence community in developing innovative and leading edge solutions and capability, ultimately in support of the Australian Defence Organisation. The Australian Defence Organisation (ADO) and industry has expert knowledge of its business domains and the context in which it is delivering Defence products. DSIC provides expertise in concepts, strategies, modelling, tools development, training and education to support the delivery of these Defence products. Bringing these knowledge bases together will assist in creating an innovative and world-leading Australian Defence community. To fulfil the above roles, the strategic goals of the DSIC research program are:

  • Undertake short term R&D projects, in collaboration with Defence and industry partners to provide knowledge-intensive services not otherwise available in Australia, develop trust with stakeholders and track record of delivery and to build a platform for long term partnerships in research and development.
  • Undertake medium term applied research projects to develop new capabilities and intellectual property for subsequent exploitation.
  • Seek opportunities to undertake cross-cutting research across traditional discipline boundaries.
  • Create opportunities to establish international linkages of intellectual and commercial value.
  • Establish national leadership in at least three areas of significant importance within the systems engineering space, and international leadership in at least one area.

The initial research themes which provide the impetus for this collaborative innovation and research leadership build on existing strengths of DSIC partner research organisations:

  • Theme 1. Systems engineering, systems integration and modelling and simulation of systems of systems.
  • Theme 2. Network engineering encompassing modelling, measurement and management of tactical and strategic networks. In addition, DSIC has identified a long term strategic research theme for the development of new capabilities:

Each of these themes supports the DSIC research program philosophy.
